It was impossible, so it took a little longer to accomplish --Wally Byam

Airstream's founder, Wally Byam, built trailers in his backyard as a hobby. He had a vision of a trailercoach that traveled like a stream of air. In 1934, he created one that was rounded and offered less resistance to the wind. It was a first. Wally also dropped the floor below the wheel wells, giving it unheard of headroom. This trailer was the design that started both an industry and a whole way of life.

SkydeckThen, as Airstream became a major manufacturer and gathered momentum, more innovations followed. Over the years, Airstream was to develop a number of new features: all-weather disc breaks that don't fade, a suspension system that's simpler yet tougher than any other, and an aluminum body that's lighter and stronger than any other around. Some other firsts include sewage holding tanks, safety glass windows, and a Central Control Panel that monitors the holding tanks and condition of the trailer battery.

Cleanlining is streamlining
Innovation never stops at Airstream. In fact, Airstream is currently setting a new company record for the number of major development projects underway. As a result of our work, we will improve our manufacturing process and introduce entirely new products to the market.

CCD interiorIn 2001 Airstream introduced a revolutionary new concept in travel trailer interior design. Working with Chris Deam, an accomplished architect and designer, Airstream released the International CCD. There is no other trailer like it on the market today, and has accolades from the travel trailer and design community alike — it was even on display at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

In 2002, the SkyDeck motorhome introduction was another Airstream first. This motorhome is equipped with the industry's only rooftop deck, complete with cushioned seating for 8-12 people, automatic-raising safety rails, a king-sized sun lounger, a built-in propane barbeque, a built-in wet bar and yacht umbrellas.

Last year Airstream is introduced the 16 foot and 22 foot International CCD with all new interior designs and state-of-the-art Airstream construction.

Sprinter WestfaliaThis year Airstream introduced the new Sprinter Westfalia. With superb fuel economy and three outstanding warranties, just ease behind the driver’s seat and follow your travel whims wherever they urge you to go, anytime, anywhere. It’s the exciting, carefree way to travel around town or the world. Outfitted by Westfalia and Dodge. Upfitted and sold by Airstream.
