Designer David Winick took the lead in creating an interior space that is both ultra modern and retrospective. Natural linoleum in warm tones brings out the highlights of genuine wood veneers. Upholstery inspired by 1940’s tailoring heightens textural contrasts, reflecting in an array of aluminum surfaces. Airstream Inc has partnered with Nissan Design America (NDA) and Kelty, producing a lightweight multi-purpose tent-trailer hybrid.

This stylish trailer, designed to be both low cost and flexible, was the brainchild of NDA aces Bryan Thompson and Steve Moneypenny, who envisioned a travel vehicle that was a springboard for outdoor adventures rather than a living room on wheels.

The BaseCamp pays homage to Airstream’s past, taking styling and content cues from the original “Torpedo” concept developed by company founder Wally Byam in the 1930’s. The attached tent extension, engineered by outdoor products giant Kelty, provides a lightweight way to double the available living space.

Ultra-light: most conventional vehicles, with a 2,000 lb gross weight, when fully loaded, can tow Airstream’s BaseCamp.

Aggressive styling: 20” wheels, wrap-around windows, low profile stance, and Airstream’s trademark aluminum skin give BaseCamp a look like nothing else on the street.

Just the basics: keeping the weight and price tag down, the BaseCamp is minimally outfitted and the MSRP is expected to remain under $20,000.
